Outdoor Lighting Can Make You Feel More Secure

By Marci Glover

During the summer, when there are more daylight hours, we feel more relaxed when we are outside. However, when the nights draw in we feel less secure because we are uncertain of where we are and who is close by. This is even true when we are in our garden, in the dark it all seems unfamiliar.

Even if you open your front door to somebody after dark, there is a good chance that you cannot see who they are, because there is nothing to illuminate their face. This is why it is a good idea to install some outside lighting. Outdoor lighting, as well as being practical, can also enhance the look of your home and garden.

This form of illumination can take many styles. You are no longer limited to having cabled floodlights which could also be a hazard by dazzling visitors. Outdoor lights can take the form of poles that highlight walkways, or even just switch themselves on as people move towards them, therefore only be temporary, but serving a very useful purpose.

The way you intend to use the lights will have a great bearing on how best to power them. If you intend to use security lamps that are on throughout the long dark nights it would be sensible to connect them to the mains supply. However, if you are using them to make your garden safer to walk through in early evening, or to work with motion detectors, solar powered lamps should be adequate.

If you do not illuminate your outdoor spaces of your home, you will have to plan parties and barbecues so that they finish when the sun goes down. By installing subtle lights your parties could carry on well past sunset. Your guests would still be able to see each other, and the surrounding areas would be highlighted by well-positioned table and wall lamps.

The very same lamps could also be used as a security measure. You may choose to have them set on a timer, or have them fitted with motion detectors. The best time to install this kind of lighting into your outdoor spaces is when the area is being landscaped, and the designers can lay cables at the same time. However, if the garden is already in place, it is possible to install solar powered lamps. This also allows for flexibility of repositioning the light source, as required.

If you are to use powerful lamps close to public areas there are a lot of things that you have to bear in mind. It is important that the lamps do not shine directly into the eyes of passes by, especially if they are driving vehicles. This can be extremely dangerous, particularly when the lights are very bright and operate by motion detectors, as the sudden light could temporarily blind a driver.

Landscapers and lighting specialists have the experience to help you when it comes to the placement of lamps, but this could work out very expensive. A way of reducing the long-term cost of installing outside lights will be to use of portable solar powered lamps. These will be expensive initially, but extremely cheap to run. Once installed you will feel more secure, and make more use of your outdoor areas.
