What To Look For In A High Quality Cubic Zirconia Ring

By Jerri Perry

Many people admire the dazzling beauty of cubic zirconia jewellery and also appreciate its affordable prices. Much like buying real gemstones, man-made CZ's can also differ in quality, which means that it's useful to know how to identify the positive attributes of a piece worth purchasing. Some look so much like a real diamond that it's hard to tell them apart. These guidelines will make choosing a high quality cubic zirconia ring an easier task.

The nature of CZ's is to emit color flashes in the full rainbow spectrum, diamonds on the other hand only give off blue or white light alone. Therefore if one desires a diamond lookalike, it's best to choose a higher quality CZ, as these tend to emanate light in a manner similar to diamonds.

As with diamonds, CZ's are also assigned grades based on their overall quality. The top specimens have maximum hardness and reflect a higher degree of white light, and therefore look the closest to real diamonds. These grades start at "A" which is the lowest and go up to "AAAAA" which represents of the finest. The majority of costume pieces feature lower grade stones, but there are some available with higher grade settings as well.

The clarity must also be considered, just like when one is buying diamond jewellery. Clarity can be described as how clear the stone appears to the eye. Ideally one should be able to see into the stone's center, however sometimes this is not possible and it can have a cloudy or greyish look to it, this can happen during some sub-standard manufacturing processes. Clear-stone rings not only look more realistic and appealing, but they are also stronger.

If cubic zirconias are ever described as "synthetic diamonds" by a seller, this is not to be taken as truth. Although both CZ's and synthetic gemstones are man-made, they are not equivalent to each other. A true synthetic gemstone needs to have all the same gemological and physical traits as a diamond, and a CZ has its own traits, so it cannot be accurately referred to as synthetic diamond.

Hardness of a gemstone is measured against the Moh's scale, with diamonds having the greatest hardness and a rating of 10. The top quality CZ's usually have a score of 8.5, and those with lower grades are about a 6, making them susceptible to scratches, in particular if worn on the hands or wrists.

Some Cubic Zirconias come in colors as well, making them look similar to such gemstones as rubies, amethysts, emeralds, and sapphires. However this resemblance is limited to the hue alone, since CZ's typically sparkle and emit more light than genuine stones or even their synthetic counterparts. These pieces are not intended as a substitute for the actual gems, but rather made to be enjoyed for their own style.

Choosing a high quality cubic zirconia ring can be done more successfully when one keeps these basic points in mind, however it is also a fairly subjective issue, since personal taste has much to do with it. A ring need not look exactly like a diamond to appeal to someone's eye, the most important thing is to always buy pieces one will continue to wear happily for many years.
