In order to get rid of pain and inflammation, get rid of diseased areas and the reduction of metabolism, extremely low temperatures are used.

Abnormal cells that are sometimes found on the cervix can easily be destroyed using a procedure known as cryosurgery. A malignancy or cervical cancer can be the eventual outcome if these cells are not removed in advance. Biopsy samples are usually taken from a small part of the cervix to identify the extent of the disease before the procedure can be recommended by a doctor.

During cryosurgery specialized instrument is inserted into the vagina and placed onto the cervix firmly. The cervix and the abnormal cell are covered completely by the instrument and nitrogen which is in liquid form is released at a very low temperature of 50 degree celsius.

The abnormal cells are destroyed slowly by the low temperature after which the cell are left to slough off slowly in about two to three weeks. The cervix is left to freeze for three more minutes before the procedure is completed. It is then left to thaw after which the whole procedure is repeated for an additional three minutes.

You may feel some cramps during the start of the procedure. This is brought about by the direct exposure of the cervix to cold temperature. A compared to the normal menstrual cramps, the pain might get worse a time goes by. However, several hours after the procedure, the cramps will steadily wear off. The cramping is minimized as the end of the procedure nears.

Following the cryosurgery, it is advised that the body should be in a relaxed position for the rest of the day. Regular activities for the women can be undertaken as quickly as the following day. During the recovery process, the patient may notice a slight increase in the vaginal discharge. However, nothing should be inserted into the vaginal canal for at least two to three weeks after the procedure.

Activities that should be avoided during the recovery period of two to three weeks include sexual intercourse, douching and insertion of tampons. When it comes to killing as well as getting rid of the abnormal cervical cells, especially if they are in the lower part of the cervix, cryosurgery is more often than not very effective. This has been proven in at least 85% of such cases which have turned out successful.

Cryosurgery carries along its own dangers just as any other medical procedure. The dangers associated with the procedure are however very little. It is essential that you are taken through the risks and side effects of the procedure before considering it. Some side effects that may arise after the procedure are like fever, pain, foul smell, a discharge that is yellow in color and vaginal bleeding that is unrelated to the monthly flow.
