Fire Retardant Coatings Should Be Used Not Only In Buildings

By Essie Osborn

Untold danger can at times come from fire when mishandled. It can easily convert a big structure into useless smoke. The effects therein are quite intolerable and therefore should be checked. In all structures, it would really help if the surfaces had fire retardant coatings

Buildings nowadays are constructed with safety as a core requirement. The walls need to be well constructed such that they cannot easily burn. This is done by the use of metals that are non conductors of heat. The engineers have to ensure that these are very strong since live electrical wires that form part of the wiring sometimes can become faulty. As a precautionary measure, a thorough environmental assessment test is done before a structure is erected.

One of the common covering that is resistant to fire is a special paint. If such paint is applied to a wooden surface, it becomes untouchable by any kind of flame. Most of them are water based since water is a poor conductor and it has some desirable qualities that enhance the extinguishing effects. If combined with the correct supplements, it forms one of the best battalion whose territory is impassable by the advancing forces of fire.

So long as the surface has good adhesion, it can easily be applied with these chemicals. A good product of this nature should be able to dry fast. It also must be non conductive. It also should be corrosion free and with a neutral charge. All these are qualities of water, making the best ingredient. The material, once protected, will be able to convert the fire energy into a non flammable heat that is harmless, since it cannot ignite.

Vehicles too require fireproofing. Those that carry big personalities normally have anti bomb techniques. However, it is also important for the normal ones too must be fireproofed since they get involved in fiery accidents most often. Since we cannot know when they are going to occur, avoiding accidents is mandatory.

Aircrafts also require this protection. They normally put the lives of many people at risk whenever there is a small hiccup resulting into inflammation of the engines. There is need for their manufacturers to apply vigilance when assembling the parts to make sure all are in good working condition. Finally, coatings that are flameproof also should be fitted. Most deaths normally can be avoided since they occur when the plane has touched ground. If it were fireproofed, there would be no danger whatsoever.

The materials used for coating should however, meet some required standards. Apart from preventing the harm from flames, they also should be free of harmful and poisonous chemicals. Some chemicals are known to be non conductors of heat but are highly corrosive. Such should be avoided at all costs. Poison is more dangerous as it leaves longer lasting negative environmental impact than fires.

Manufacturers are thus required to come up with products that are fit for a variety of surfaces. Some materials like mattresses can easily catch fire and therefore need good coating. Wooden parts of buildings also need fireproofing since they make a big percentage of the structures. In some cases, temporary coats can be used.
